Hunter Base - [open]

In the halls of the Reality Vanish Hunter base, if one listened carefully, one could hear... humming. Yes, humming. For the first time in what felt like ages, Axl was in a good mood. He knew what he wanted, he was allowed to do it, and, most importantly, it was possible. Possible and confirmed as of this afternoon.

His world was there. He was going home.

All that was left was to pack up the few belongings he'd collected while he'd been here and tie up a few loose ends.

Feeding a Nightmare - [private]

Well. Things had certainly been interesting lately. Not that that was necessarily a good thing. Nightmare going berserk... yeah, not a good thing. At least they'd managed to bring him back to his senses.

But then X had been injured in a ruins excursion, leaving Nightmare with no one to feed from. When Axl found out about this, the solution had seemed obvious. Now, tired and drained, but thankfully patched up, he wasn't so sure it had been a good idea to volunteer himself to take X's place. But the reasons he'd volunteered were still good ones, so he wasn't sure it had been a bad idea, either. He didn't know what that ultimately meant, but there was one thing he was certain of:

He'd be glad when X had recovered.

[personal log - Signas and X]

That conversation with Signas could have gone better, but it could have gone a whole lot worse. For the time being, I'm stuck here.

I'm not sure I have Signas' confidence that I'll be able to go back to the way I was before Lumine. I can't just pretend that it never happened and that it didn't affect me.

Spoke with X, too. Told him about what I did to him. I don't think either of us is very happy right now, but... I think, maybe, we might be able to start over.

On the bright side, I got video games! There's the awesome one with a little guy with guns and he goes around blowing up rocks and trees while searching for treasure. Oh, and any enemies that get in his way, too. Can't forget about those Rock Monsters. They just sit there, waiting, pretending to be innocent, normal, treasure-hiding rocks, then BAM! They try to eat you alive! So not cool.

But to make a completely intentional pun, blowing them to smithereens rocks. >D

Healing Sleep

Axl slept the sleep of the dead. It felt like it had been a very long week indeed.

Although his meeting with that other Harpuia in the Nexus had contributed to his stress, it was probably the furthest thing from his mind. Of more immediate concern was what had happened after he'd checked up on Serin after that run-in with that shadow Zero in the Ruins. One thing had led to another, and soon he'd found himself invited into Serin's home.

That was when thing had started to go wrong. First the personality bleed from the X DNA he carried, then from the Zero DNA he had taken from the corpse in that house. It was lucky that no one had died during the rampage that Axl had gone on while wearing Zero's form.

Now, thanks to X, Harpuia, and Zero, Axl's mind was his own again, but at the cost of his freedom. He was confined to the Hunter compound and would be under constant surveillance, most notably in the form of Nightmare. Axl's last encounter with the pink-haired Hunter had gone well enough, and he'd never actually realized any of his plans toward him, so he seemed the best choice out of all the Hunters to be the one to watch over him.

Axl still didn't know what to think about himself, about who he was or what he'd done, but for now, it didn't really matter. Such thoughts could be put off until after he'd slept and had a chance to heal.

Blurring

Axl entered his room at the hostel and dismissed his armor before gratefully laying down on the bed. His first excursion to the Nexus hadn't been particularly tiring. Irritating, but not tiring. He hadn't enjoyed meeting that alternate of his.

After returning from the Nexus, he'd gone out to the ruins again to hunt for more things to sell. He'd also wanted to put his subtank to combat test, to see how long he could hold a transformation while fighting. Naturally, in the cramped spaces and broken corridors of the ruins, fighting enemies of varying strength, X's form had been the obvious choice. He'd lasted about forty-five minutes before being forced to revert. Not bad, all things considered. The booty hadn't been bad, either.

But now he was tired. Tired, but not sleepy. He just laid there for a while staring up at the ceiling, a feeling of surreality making him feel like he was adrift in a sea.

[private entry] Blues and Nexus

I met one of X's relatives today. Blues. The original robot prototype. Not quite what the history books want us to believe. He mentioned something really interesting, a place called the Nexus, where apparently fiction can become reality.

Got a new subtank installed. Did some test runs, ran some calculations. I can now stay in any given transformation for roughly an hour, give or take, depending on what it is and what I do.

Once my subtank recharges, I'm going to explore this Nexus a bit.

[private log]

That meeting with Zero and X really could have gone better. It could have gone worse, too, but it could have gone better.

I think Zero might suspect that I'm not what I seem. With that weird ability of his to read some of what I'm thinking and feeling, I wouldn't put it past him to have picked him something I didn't mean to show.

It's probably best that I didn't end up going to their world to help in their revolution. It would have been hard for my own sanity, not just constantly watching my thoughts and feelings, but also having to hear them like that. It reminds me so much of Lumine...

Took a trip to the ruins. Ran into Harpuia. Apparently, he stuck his head in the mechanical equivalent of a wasps' nest and was being chase by drones and dragonmechs. I helped him out, got damaged in the fight, but I also got DNA from one of the dragonmechs and salvaged several parts. Even after getting repairs, I should come out ahead. I hope. I'll find out after I go to the doctor.

Even if I end up in more debt, in the long run, it might still have been worth it. We'll see.

X DNA, failed attempt on Serin, and groundwork with Zero and Nightmare

Axl teleported directly into his room at the hostel, feeling very grumpy about how his morning had gone. So close. He'd come so close to laying the groundwork for getting close to an alternate of Zero. He'd even gone so far as to fantasize about the possibility of stealing that one's DNA. Then an X had appeared and thrown a wrench in his plans. Now he wouldn't be able to use the X DNA that he had gotten around either Serin or that X. Maybe he could try again later as Axl, but he'd have to be very careful. If something went wrong, it would be easier for someone to track him down. He doubted he would try anytime soon.

I have other things to think about anyway, he told himself as he showered off the stench of the sewers. Like earning enough money to pay off my debt, buy spare energy capsules, maybe a subtank, if I can find one, and get an apartment. There'll be other opportunities.

He even had one in mind already. Nightmare. A living virus in a reploid body. The being intrigued Axl, and he wanted very much to know what it would be like to obtain the DNA data of a virus. He had no fear of being infected; he was immune to viruses, after all. His meeting and conversation with Nightmare had gone well enough. The purple-haired creature was even the one to suggest Ruins-hunting as a source of income. That was where he had met another Zero.

That meeting had not started off well. It was more than just disturbing to find someone who could read his feelings like a book. When Zero had actually spoken in his mind, he had thought for a minute that Lumine had come back. Needless to say, he had not reacted well.

Fortunately, things had smoothed out after that, without Axl's true nature being revealed. There was even a chance that he might get to help this Zero out with a revolution happening in the other's world. Zero had wanted to speak with someone else before bringing him in, though, and Axl was still waiting to hear back from him.

Zero represented yet another opportunity for Axl. His chances of actually getting what he wanted from Zero weren't that great, but the potential, the ability to read minds and feelings, or even just to protect his own from the invasion of others, was more than worth the effort.

Once he had finished cleaning up, Axl prepared to head out to the Ruins. Best make a start on paying his debt.

The best laid plans...

As Axl climbed into the recharge pod, he thought about how the day had gone. After his sentience testing, he had gone to the library to look up information on the energy shields that his tester had used. That, in turn, had led to his encounter with Blaze. That conversation had not started off well, but in the end, they'd parted ways amicably enough. Axl had also found out where energy shields could be bought. All in all, it had been a productive experience.

Afterwards, he had headed straight for the Hunters, intending to put his newly obtained ID to good use. Unfortunately, before he got there, a reploid named Gate had literally appeared out of nowhere. That encounter had not gone well. In retrospect, Axl grudgingly admitted to himself that he'd been a bit too jumpy, but it still irritated him that all the blame was laid at his feet. Damn that Harpuia.

Harpuia had, of course, reported the incident to Signas, and as a result Signas hadn't allowed him to join the Hunters.

With all his plans lying in pieces, Axl had had no choice but to return to the City Hall to get help finding a place to stay for the night. He'd also asked them to try to find his home world, but they'd been completely unsuccessful. They couldn't even determine if his world was still there. The concept of vanishing realities probably should have disturbed him more, but really, it only left him annoyed. It was just one more thing interfering with getting what he wanted.

In the end, the people at City Hall had given him a few brochures, directions to a hostel, and a small handful of money. The hostel had rooms where mechanicals could recharge, which brought him to where he was now. Axl grimaced as he finished settling into the pod, closing his eyes as he thumbed the switch to activate it.

No, today had not gone how he wanted at all. Tomorrow, though... Well, he'd deal with tomorrow when it got here.

The road to sentience testing

The past day had certainly been... interesting, to say the least. Axl had run into someone he was convinced was an alternate of Layer. The name even matched, although she didn't look anything like the Layer he knew. She had given him directions to the Maverick Hunters headquarters.

On his way there, he had run into an alternate of X. That had been a shock. He was going to have to be careful about assuming people were from his universe. That had been a good thing to remind himself about when he actually got to the Hunter townhouse because the first person he'd run into was Zero. They'd bantered around a bit - until Zero had let drop that there was a Lumine alive and well and in the Hunters. Axl had not been happy about that. Lumine...

He didn't want to think about that.

Zero had taken him up to see Signas. Signas was just fine with him joining the Hunters, but only if he had a Reality Vanish ID. Said ID required sentience testing. Axl had nearly balked then and there. He disliked and avoided tests that were meant to root around in his psyche and he disliked being around people who liked doing such things. He did not want people taking any special interest in him.

But he wanted to be a Hunter. It would be the best place for him to lay low for a bit and recreate his network of influence and 'friendship.' To get there, he had to have an ID, and to do that... Well, he figured he could always back out - with a gun, if necessary - if he decided the test was too invasive.

'Invasive' was not the word for that test. Sneaky, manipulative, infuriating, misleading - those were much better words. Axl still didn't know how he passed. He had, after all, shot his tester. Bastard deserved it, too. But somehow, that was exactly what they had wanted him to do. They'd been prepared for it, even, with the tester wearing an energy shield that teleported him away to safety.

He still didn't understand the criteria they were looking for, but he wasn't going to look a gift met in the mouth. That kind of thing led to you getting shot in the face. He had his ID. That was all that mattered. Now he just needed to blow off some steam before facing Signas again.
